Wisconsin BCA Pool League Crown New Winners at WIBCAPL State Championships

It certainly appears that here in Wisconsin we are doing something right: and I don't mean making the best cheese in the world. It seems we are adding more every year: more players, more tables, and best of all: more money. This was done without adding more stress, confusion, and overall size of the venue. Around 1,800 paid entries will testify to the smooth and generally timely flow of the matches. For the most part all matches were finished by early Sunday evening.

Over one thousand players gathered in one place to challenge themselves rack after ever-changing rack. They put their skills against each other, sometimes late into the night. They fight fatigue, varying levels of aiming fluid, personal demons, and opponents who have a pre-shot routine that could put an owl to sleep. They push on. Sometimes getting to the money is motivation. Sometimes a compulsive need to overcome adversity jump starts a table run that you never forget, proving to yourself that you have what it takes, or to someone else that the last time you crumbled like stale crackers under pressure simply will not happen again. No matter the reason for competing on a table with six holes that at the worst time possible get in the way of the white ball, and 15 other balls that need to get in the holes, the end result feels pretty darn nice. Pool is precision, imagination, luck, determination, and a totally incredible way to share. All of those who competed, spectated, or contributed to this grand experience need to be thanked.

Dean Roeseler, also known as "DR Pool", his hard working staff, and the WIBCAPL board members contributed immensely to the success of this event. Each and every tournament teaches us something new: better ways to enhance the players’ overall experience, and how to achieve a long lasting positive impression. This is our mission and we will continue to dedicate ourselves to it.

A special thank you goes to the Olympia Resort and Conference Center in Oconomowoc for being our host site again this year. Having the tournament midway between Milwaukee and Madison offers easy access for the majority of players. The staff at Olympia was always gracious, attentive, and in general very pleasant to interact with. The WIBCAPL thanks you.

The Wisconsin-based pool cue makers need to be given a special thank you also. Pechauer, Jacoby Custom Cues, and Jackson Cues make our raffle a huge success every year by donating sticks for the purpose of raising added monies to the event. The effort that Diane, Mike, and Anna from Jackson cue put into the raffle were above and beyond expectations.

The tables were Valley’s provided by High Country Promotions and DR Pool Promotions. On site venders were Ultimate Apparel (Scott Dahlke), Jackson Cues, and Jacoby Custom Cues. Plaques and trophies by Mick Fischer were an outstanding addition to great cash. Yes, I said cash payout: no waiting days to get paid and then receiving checks that are a hassle to get cashed. We will continue the cash payout in all future events. Many thanks to all.

Congratulations to all the finishers in all the divisions. Having too many to mention all in this release we will stick to the Master division finalists. The ladies division this year was dominated by the most well-known and feared lady player in the state. Pam Patton took top honors in both the 8-ball and the 9-ball events. Winning both events is truly a work of determination and art. Pam is now and certainly will continue to be a force to be dealt with in the future. The men’s Master 8-ball was taken home by past 9-ball champion Dave Coles Jr. Dave is a gritty and ruthless pool player who can and will take advantage of any small mistake made by his opponents. His shot-making skills and spot-on cue ball control along with pattern choices make him one of the nation’s top players. The men’s 9-ball was captured by past 8-ball champion Tim Ruenger. Devoting more time to his family than too pool in the last couple of years has not complicated Tim’s ability to concentrate when he needed to. Using his flawless stroke and intense focus, Tim clawed his way passed a tough field to champion the 9-ball event.

For a full list of results, winners’ photos, and even bracket photos, simply go to our newly designed web site: www.wibcapl.com, courtesy of WIBCAPL Vice President and MasterChamp webmaster Ron Crom.

I believe it is up to us as representatives of the game to elevate the stigma that surrounds this game. Those who attended this year’s state tourney did just that. We need to change the face of this wonderful game. All the players and spectators in attendance contributed positively towards this goal. The WIBCAPL board of directors salutes you, and thanks you, and looks forward to the thriving future of pool in the great state of Wisconsin.

New BCAPL Nationals Leisure Division

CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (March 3, 2013) – Last summer CueSports International (CSI) announced that it will be adding a whole new singles division to the 37th (2013) BCAPL National Championships. With the move to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino for the July 17-27, 2013 national event, the expanded space allows for more pool table and thus more play opportunities. The BCAPL has added the Leisure Men’s and Leisure Women’s Singles Divisions. Below are details and eligibility for these two new singles groups.

• Players who have played for 2 years in Open, Senior, or Super Senior (since 2005), and have never cashed in any Singles Division are eligible.
• Players may also be eligible if they have finished a full league session in the bottom half of their local league, and their league is enrolled on LeagueSys. We need LeagueSys to help research player history.
• Every player will be researched for player history. The eligibility criteria above do NOT insure playing in the new division. Known ability will be a big factor in establishing eligibility for this new division.
• Players entering the Leisure Division may also enter the 2nd Chance Singles events (if eligibility criteria are met), all mini tournaments, and much more.

The purpose of this division is to give lesser skilled players (called “B” players in some states) a level playing field against players of equal ability. For years, hundreds of players have participated in the Open division with no results. We greatly appreciate their support of the BCAPL and the BCAPL National Championships and wish to give them a fair chance to truly compete and cash among similarly skilled players.

If a player is unsure of his/her eligibility, he/she may send an email to Bill Stock, CSI Rules and Referee Director, requesting approval to enter the new Leisure Division- bill@playcsipool.com
Relocating the BCAPL National Championships to the larger Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, July 17-27,2013, allows us to add this new division. We look at this as an opportunity to introduce more entry level pool players to “The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World!” This welcome addition demonstrates CSI’s ongoing commitment to provide … More Choices for All Players.

Klatt and Frideres Crowned 2013 USBTC 8-Ball Champions

CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (March 3, 2013) – The 20th US Bar Table Championships final divisions concluded Sunday, March 3rd at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada. Jason Klatt from Canada and Jessica Frideres from Iowa fended off their respective and highly competitive fields to be crowned the champions in the USBTC men’s and women’s 8-ball divisions.

The 2013 USBTC proved to be all about diversity as no one player dominated the entire week. Heading into the final three days and switching from 9-ball to 8-ball, thus far the men had seen Dennis Orcollo from the Philippines take the men’s 10-ball event and Shane Van Boening from the US rip through to win the 9-ball event. In the women’s side, Canadian Brittany Bryant claimed first in the 10-ball and Rebecca Wagner from the US won the 9-ball event.

In the hotly contested men’s 8-ball group which was a race to 5 and double elimination, every break, safety and roll counts. With 205 players vying for a chunk of that divisions $20,800 prize fund and a board swarming with current and former national and world champions, who would come out on the final board was anyone’s guess.

Long time Canadian professional Jason Klatt was in dead stoke during the men’s 8-ball event mowing down his opponents with relative ease. Second place finisher was well known multiple straight pool champion Thorsten Hohmann. Rounding out the top 4 places were Francisco Bustamante in 3rd place and Ernesto Dominguez in 4th.

There were 55 players in the Women’s 8-Ball Division – the largest field to date since the separate women’s divisions were added in 2010. In the women’s finals match, Wagner came close to taking two titles this year, but was thwarted by Frideres who capitalized on a couple of key errors made by Wagner. Frideres won 4-2. In 3rd place was Mary Rakin and 4th place was Vivian Villarreal.

In the week long bonus point and award competition the top three men were: Dennis Orcollo ($3,000), Shane Van Boening ($1,000) and Rodney Morris ($500). The women’s bonus points were a tie between Rebecca Wagner and Vivian Villarreal with the two women splitting the bonuses equally ($375 each).

The 2013 USBTC was produced by CueSports International (CSI) and sponsored by the Grand Sierra Resorts and Casino. Live streaming was provided by The Action Report with commentary by Ken Schuman (www.theactionreport.com) and tournament direction by Bad Boys Billiard Productions with CSI. Shane Van Boening Dominates and Wagner Tames Tornado in US Bar Table 9-Ball Divisions

CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (March 3, 2013) – With the 10-ball competition completed, 144 men and 35 women switched gears Wednesday, February 27th to start play in the 9-ball divisions at the 20th US Bar Table Championships (USBTC) in Reno, Nevada at the luxurious Grand Sierra Resort and Casino.

With a literal who’s who of players participating in the event, this year’s competition has been stiffer than ever before. In addition to the prize funds for each division, men and women who enter all three disciplines in their respective divisions; 10-ball, 9-ball and 8-ball, receive points based on how they finish. The top three men and top two women point leaders receive a bonus at the end of the seven day Reno event.

In the Men’s 9-Ball division, it was all about Shane Van Boening (SVB). Van Boening, who has dominated US men’s professional pool for half a decade, is accustomed to being in the top three in most, if not all, events he enters. However he started the week a little slow, but still respectively, with a 5-6th place finish in the 10-ball.

However, it was evident in the Men’s 9-ball that SVB had his primo groove back sailing through the pack like a hot knife through butter. In the race to 9, double elimination alternate break format, SVB only lost 23 total games in 8 matches including a shut-out against Dennis Orcollo sending the recent 10-ball division winner to the one loss side. In the finals Orcollo met back up with SVB looking to win two divisions in a row. This was not to be as SVB continued his domination winning the finals 9-7.

In the Women’s 9-Ball division, although surrounded by several WPBA touring professionals, Rebecca Wagner showed her 9-ball prowess once again for a second year in a row. While not a full time professional player, Wagner has an impressive pool resume over the past several years including winning the 2012 USBTC Women’s 9-Ball and 10-Ball divisions, the 2010 WPBA Amateur Nationals, and the 2006 BCAPL National Championships - Women’s Master Singles 8-Ball.

Wagner made short order of her opponents throughout the race to 7 double elimination division. In six matches she only lost 13 total games and in the finals tamed a tornado named Vivian Villarreal 7-4.

The USBTC wraps up with the 8-ball divisions March 1-3. The Action Report (TAR) is steaming the entire seven days live. You can catch all the action at www.theactionreport.com.

Orcollo and Bryant Take 10-Ball Divisions at 20th US Bar Table Championships

CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (March 1, 2013) – Reno, Nevada became pool central in the US Monday, February 25th. Players from all over the world, both amateur and professional, descended upon the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino to test their 7’ table skills at the 20th US Bar Table Championships (February 25-March 3).

The popular seven day event is produced by CueSports International (CSI) and sponsored by the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino. The tournament features 6 divisions, all played on 7’ Diamond tables: Men’s 10-Ball, Men’s 9-Ball, Men’s 8-Ball, Women’s 10-Ball, Women’s 9-Ball and Women’s 8-Ball. This year there are a total of 583 entries, a 14% increase from 2012. Players who enter all three of their respective divisions are eligible to be awarded points based on their finishes towards a bonus payout. The top three men and the top two women with the highest overall points will receive bonuses.

In addition to the 6 main divisions, this year CSI added second chance single elimination events to each group, 10-ball, 9-ball and 8-ball. Joining CSI at the USBTC for a second consecutive year, the WorldPPA is hosting their organization’s World Championship for its members.

The first two and a half days of the US Bar Table Championships are dedicated to the 10-ball competition. In the Men’s 10-Ball Division 118 players competed for their piece of the $17,300 purse that was allocated for that division alone.

While he sustained a 5th round loss to Georgian Stevie Moore, Dennis Ocollo, hot off his win at the 17th Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament, plowed through his remaining opponents on the one loss bracket to pocket the $4,550 first place prize.

Although relatively new to the USBTC, the women’s divisions also saw growth this year. In 2010 CSI added for the first time a separate women’s 8-ball division to the USBTC. Bolstered by how well that inaugural women’s only division was received, in 2011 CSI added a separate women’s division in all three games.

This year the Women’s 10-Ball division saw 26 entrants with a division payout of $2,300. Canadian Brittany Bryant, who has been a dominant force in women’s pool in North America since she was barely a teen, went undefeated including beating “Texas Tornado” Vivian Villarreal in the finals to take the $875 first place prize.

Upon completion of the 10-ball divisions, the 9-ball action starts up then the seven day Reno event concludes with 8-ball from Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3rd. The Action Report (TAR) is steaming the entire seven days live. You can catch all the action at www.theactionreport.com.

This Weekend – CSI 17th “Swanee” Feature World’s Best and Free Live Streaming

CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (February 20, 2013) – The Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament, being held this weekend (February 23-24, 2013) at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California, has over the course of 17 years become one of the most beloved and anticipated two day 9-Ball tournaments in the western US. The “Swanee” is still a celebration of much loved Cali player, Jay Swanson, who passed away and whose demeanor and gentleness to all who knew him still has an impact. However, the “Swanee” is now considered by many the starting point for many players ushering the beginning of the year’s tournament season.

In 2013, the event will feature the strongest 192 player field in its history including top professionals such as Alex Pagulayan (2011 and 2012 winner), Jose Parica (2010 winner), Shane van Boening, Oscar Dominguez, Ernesto Dominguez, Warren Kiamco, Stevie Moore, John Morra, Rodney Morris, Jayson Shaw, Max Eberle, Santos Sambajon and former World Champions Dennis Orcollo, Ronnie Alcano, Darren Appleton, and Francisco Bustamante just to name a few. However, the international group will have their hands full with some well known tough California players such as Corey Harper, Sal Butera, Louis Ulrich, and Dave Hemmah.

The “Swanee” is a known grinder of an event that challenges players both mentally and physically with 192 players in only two days. To win requires not just talent, but focus and energy both on and off the table.

So who is favored?

For the past week or so, Dennis Orcollo, Ronnie Alcano and Alex Pagulayan have been seen at Hard Times getting into action, playing the ghost, challenging hard-hitters with huge spots, just to keep in form and be ready for this event. Shane VanBoening has been playing alot also in Vegas, where he has just defeated Mike Dechaine in the TAR 31 Challenge Match, running 3 & 4 packs like a walk in the park! Francisco Bustamante & Scotland’s Jayson Shaw are hot off the grill from a recent, Accu-Stats Challenge, where neither player had more than a 2 game lead in a race to 21 but finally ending in a loss for Shaw! Max Eberle is also hitting well after defeating Dennis Orcollo in the finals at the Derby Classic, 14.1 Challenge. In addition, don’t forget Manny Chau, Corey Harper and Rodney Morris, who have all felt comfortable enough at Hard Times to chalk up some wins against players like Efren Reyes, Sal Butera and Louis Ulrich (Respectively). One thing’s for sure - consecutive, 2 time winner of the ‘Swanee’, Alex Pagulayan has his hands full to make it a three-peat as the pro’s keep flocking from near and far.

This event was dominated by two teams, and it was only right to see them face off in the finals. The top half of the board saw the team of Bernie Store and Steve Stowers cruise to a spot in the finals. Store and gave up one game in their first four matches and never allowed an opposing team to win more than two games on their way to the finals.

Matching them on the way to the finals was the team of "Big Daddy" Tres Kane and Cathy Kelley. Kane and Kelley were not as dominating on their way to the finals, but they also did not allow an opposing team to score more than two games in any given match. As evenly matched as these two teams appeared on paper, the finals came down to hill-hill before Stowers and Store won the case game for the 4-3 victory and $600 in prize money.

The 6 & Under event, which was added last year, was a huge success with 89 players competing this year. The event came down to a "best two out of three" face-off as Wayne Cagle and Elgin Miguel would play each other three times to determine a final victor. Miguel drew first blood with a hill-hill win over Cagle for the hot-seat, but after Cagle eliminated Collin Sayler on the one loss side, Cagle and Miguel faced off in the double elimination finals. Cagle forced a second set with a 5-3 win and then earned the tournament win with a 5-4 score in the second set. The win was worth $600 in prize money for Cagle.

The men's open division, with 77 players saw a slight increase in participants and to no one's surprise was won by Carlos Avalos. Avalos handled the win with his usual modesty and thought the tournament came down to a couple shots and a couple of lucky breaks here and there.

Avalos made note of an early match he played against Mike Williams. Avalos commented, "I was fortunate because that match was originally scheduled for early afternoon but didn't start until close to midnight. Mike had sat for several hours and was cold, and I had just come off a win. I got away with that match 5-0." Avalos was also quick to note a shot that came up in the hot-seat match against David DelCastillo. With the score tied at hill-hill Avalos hooked himself on the ball before the 8-ball. After studying the shot, Avalos played a perfect stop shot jump shot that left him straight in on the 8-ball for the win.

The finals came down to Avalos and Jason Polk - both teammates on the "No Flash Photography" team. The friendship between the two might have taken away Jason's killer instinct in this one as Carlos ran away with a 5-1 win for first place and $1,000 in prize money.

The Ladies Open division saw Sonia Flores come out on top of the 32 player field and take the hot-seat with a 4-2 win over Leandrea Gaff.

On the one loss side, Gaff ran into Terry Johnson-McCauley. Gaff had sent Johnson-McCauley to the left side of the board 4-3 late in the tournament, and the rematch went to Johnson-McCauley by the same 4-3 score. This left Flores and Johnson-McCauley in the double elimination finals. The first set went to Johnson-McCauley in a 4-0 landslide, but Flores turned things around and scored an identical 4-0 whitewash in the second set of the finals.

The final singles division saw a 20 player field in the Advanced/Masters division (double the field size from last year).
Brian Begay from Shiprock, New Mexico took the hot-seat with a 7-2 win over Vegas' Ronnie Allen. Jon Smith only had to beat Nevada's Randy Kukla on the one loss side as Allen had already headed back home and was willing to settle for third place. With Smith busy in team matches until very late, the finals didn't get underway until the late Sunday night. Fortunately for all involved (except for Smith), Begay made quick work of Smith 7-3 in the finals.

Both team divisions included interesting story lines with a comeback win in one and a three-peat of sorts in the other.
The ladies division the Bad AZZ Babes (Sonia Flores, Sara Miller, Sophia Morquecho and Susan Williams)return with hopes of defending the title they won last year. The Babes would quickly find out that the other teams were not intimidated by the reigning champions as Diamond Dazzle out of Phoenix (Anje Anderson, Char Alcott, Salina Holland, Virginia Jennings and Lori Kinny) scored a first round upset. "They came with their A-Games, and we played terrible," commented Williams after the match.

Undeterred, The Babes won five in a row on the one loss side to get to the finals against AZ Fab 4 (Beverly Cook, Kate Franco, Tonya Kurtz and Amy Wilkom-Knowlton). With two Advanced and one Master player on the team, the Bad AZZ Babes were giving up four games to other team.

That handicap was not a factor in the first set of the finals as the Babes scored a quick 12-3 win. The second was an entirely different situation as The Fab 4 fought the Babes for each game. Fab 4 held a 6-5 lead and needed one game to get to the hill. They would not get that game as the Babes showed how Bad AZZ they could be with seven straight wins for the 12-6 victory and their second team title.

The final division to crown a winner was the Men's/Mixed Team division. The defending champs, Stinger's Venom, found themselves on the rail in 9th place early in this one, but the finals still saw a player hoping to defend the title as JR Burkhart had moved from Stinger's Venom to 8 and Out this year. Burkhart had also been a member of the Tom Ryan's team that won this division in 2010, so he was going for back to back to back wins. Burkhart and his teammates Brett Huth, Brian Reich and Jon Smith had fought back from a loss to No Flash Photography to come out of the one loss side for the finals. Their opponents, the Northern Hombres team of Oscar Avila, Tyson Cole, Larry Eans, Jose Gonzalez and Ron Weeks had taken the hot-seat with a win over Pocket Pounders from Prescott.

The team 8 and Out would have to win two matches against the Hombres to capture the title and give Burkhart the three-peat. That three-peat looked to be in serious jeopardy in the first set with the Hombres leading 8-7 in the 9-10 race. Before Reich and Burkhart came to the table for their matches, Burkhart took Smith - the team anchor - aside and told him that he needed to be ready to play a final game for the set as Reich and Burkhart planned on winning their games. And win them they did.
Things took another bad turn for 8 and Out as Smith missed his last ball in a very difficult run and left Tyson Cole with a wide open rack at his mercy. Cole was finishing up the rack when he missed an 11-ball and then had to watch Smith make the last two balls for the 10-9 win in the first set.

Considering the late hour, the idea of a split was brought up, but 8 and Out quickly vetoed that idea as they were playing for first place and anything less would not be satisfying. The Hombres came out with the first two games in the finals, but 8 and Out quickly took control and won 10 of the next 12 games. In a fitting conclusion to the event, it was three time champion Burkhart who pocketed the final 8-ball to give his team the win.

All in all, the event was a great success with a 25% increase in participation from last year and what looks to be a very bright future as more and more players come out to compete in this event.

CSI and the BCA Pool League thanks the following for their support and contributions to this year’s event: Bad Boys Billiard Productions for outstanding tournament direction, Diamond Billiard Products for the great playing tables, the Radisson Fort McDowell for their sponsorship and support as host of the event, the Fort McDowell Casino, AZBilliards for the best online coverage of pool on the planet, Rick Schmitz for his great photography as usual, and the BCA Pool League Operators of Arizona and other states for making sure their players had an opportunity to attend.

CSI Introduces the “Leisure Division” for the 2013 BCAPL Championships

CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (September 14, 2012)
The “Leisure Division” will offer a lower entry fee ($80.00) and a deep payout. Here are the basic criteria for this division:

CueSports International is dedicated to creating more choices for all players. In the past 8 years CSI has directly paid out $8,000,000 to players. CSI is the parent company of the BCA Pool League and the USA Pool League. CSI also produces independent events such as the US Bar Table Championships, the Jay Swanson Memorial, the US Open One Pocket Championship and the US Open 10-Ball Championship. Teams Wrap Up at the 36th BCAPL National Championships in Final Year at the Riviera

Las Vegas, NV. - May 25, 2012 – The 36th BCAPL National Championships concluded with the team competitions. The 11 day event which has been called “the Greatest Pool Tournament in the World” was held May 9-20 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. There were 930 teams competing across eight team divisions.

The largest team division was the Mixed Open Team. With $12,500 awarded to the top finisher, play was highly competitive, and with 680 teams this group was also about endurance. Team McDermott from Wisconsin, after a first round bye, won their next eight matches to be relegated to the one loss side by Dick’s Picks from Nevada. However, they heaped their revenge two matches later when they came back to double dip Dick’s Picks in the finals 13-9 and 13-11. In an emotion filled Women’s Open Team final late in the last night of the competition, Texas team How’s My Rack screamed for joy as they outlasted 123 other women’s open teams to take the $3,600 first place prize.

The Mixed Advanced Team division, which is comprised of more advanced to master level players, had 22 teams and was a race to 11. After an early loss in the third round, the Taiwan Typhoon from Taiwan won their next five matches on the one loss side to face Night Magic from Alberta, Canada. The typhoon blew the magic out of the Canadians double dipping them in the final 11-4 then 11-9 to take the $4,000 first place check. The Women’s Advanced / Master team had some well known teams and some new faces in the group. In this division another women’s team from Texas was in the finals as was the case with the Women’s Open Team division. The Nothin’ But Trouble ladies from Texas took on Smokin’ Eights from Las Vegas, a team new to this division. Again Texas women were the victors.

Two divisions which is always popular is the Mixed Trophy Team. This year saw 90 teams compete in this popular division. The West Coast Pirates from British Columbia, Canada, lived up to their name and pillaged their opponents throughout the competition. Only the Crown Unchampions, who came from the one loss side to the finals showed signs of pelting the pirate crew. But in set two, the Canadian team fought back to win. The Women’s Trophy Team was decisively won by the Queen B’s from Kentucky although Crown Ball Busters from California worked hard to de-thrown the “Queens” they fell short with the team from the blue grass state taking home 1st place.

On the last day of the event, 55 teams regrouped to compete in the one day 9-Ball Team compitition. 2011 Men’s Mixed Master 8-Ball 2nd place finishers, Who Needs a Billiards Coach? from Minnesota won this year’s Mixed 9-Ball Team division. Once in a Mil from Iowa defeated Short ‘n Surly from California to win the Women’s 9-Ball division.

As this year’s event wound down and the approximate 300 Diamond tables were loaded back onto the trucks to return another day, talk of the 2013 was on many player’s lips about getting ready for the 37th BCAPL National Championships at its new home, the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino.

Orcollo Prevails in Battle of Champions

Las Vegas, NV. - May 24, 2012 – The last day of the CSI 4th US Open 10-Ball Championship, held May 14-19 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, was a battle of three world champions, all from the Philippines, and a young gun from the United States. Three matches were scheduled, the quarter, semi and final.

The quarter final was between 25 year old US player, Mike Dechaine, and recent BCA Hall of Fame recipient Francisco Bustamante. In the past two years Dechaine ramped up his game from feared New England player to participant on the pool world stage. In 2011 he was a member of the US Mosconi Cup team and won the Ultimate 10-Ball Championship.

Bustamante is a legend, a multiple world champion and one of a handful of players whom other professional players hope to challenge at least once in their career, win or lose, just to say they did. On this day, Bustamante prevailed against rising star Dechaine 9-4 at the premier CueSports International (CSI) event. Dechaine took home 4th place and $4,800.

Now it was down to three, all former world champions. In the semi-finals Bustamante was pitted against fellow countryman, Alex Pagulayan. After a two year hiatus from pool competition, Pagulayan has been playing as fearless as ever. In this match he started off in the lead as Bustamante struggled, but not for long, as Busty caught a gear and beat Pagulayan 9-7 relegating “The Lion” to a 3rd place finish and $6,500.

Waiting in the hot seat was Dennis “Robocop” Orcollo. In the finals against Bustamante, Orcollo dominated from the first rack. The CSI US Open 10-Ball Championship final race was to 11. The winner was required to win two ahead with a maximum cap of 15 games to win. The final match took less than two hours with Orcollo quickly taking the win 11-5 and $15,000.

For the second straight year, WPBA Professional and former Junior National Champion, Sarah Rousey, organized this fun event on behalf of CSI. She was assisted Tuesday evening by well regarded coach, Randy Goettlicher, from Master’s Pool School. Amateur players paid $10-$40 to challenge a professional player a race to two. In addition, to the chance to beat pro, amateur participants received a certificate and a photo with the pro they played.

The professional players who donated their time to the cause were Mika Immonen, Thorsten Hohmann, Stevie Moore, Kim White, Cristina De La Garza, Christopher Lawson, Kenichi Uchigaki, Dennis Orcullo, Nick Nikolidis, Angel Paglia, Max Eberle, Oscar Dominguez, Jennifer Barretta, Hunter Lombardo, and Tom Rossman. Final Four Head into the CSI 4th US Open 10-Ball Championship

Las Vegas, NV. - May 19, 2012 – The CSI 4th US Open 10-Ball Championship at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada started Monday, May 14th with 96 top players from around the world. Going into day six the last four players standing are Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan versus #6 WPA World ranked Dennis Orcollo on the winner’s side and recent BCA Hall of Fame recipient and legend Francisco Bustamante versus current #7 USA ranked Mike Dechaine on the one loss side.

Competition on the tight Diamond Pro Tables has been tough and this week’s earlier rounds saw several upsets. Perhaps one of the biggest stories throughout the week was Oscar Dominguez, currently ranked 11th in the US and #9 on the US Mosconi Team race. Dominguez lost his first round match to Orcollo hill-hill, then won his next seven matches beating out such opponents as Mika Immonen 9-0, Jeremy Jones 9-1, Johnny Archer 9-6 then finally knocked out by Dechaine, taking 7-8th place.

Another player that created quite a buzz was top Japanese player Kenichi Uchigaki. A long time participant in the international professional pool circuit, Uchigaki played this week near flawless until he was sent to the stands by Bustamante. On his road though he took out, Amar Kang 9-6, Shaun Wilkie 9-5, Diego Simon Parra 9-7 and Raul Hebles Berraquero 9-2 and taking home 5-6th place.
The US Open 10-Ball Championship is a BCA Point event, which determines the US player invites to WPA World Championships and is also a Matchroom Sport Mosconi Cup US point event, which determines which players make up the coveted US Mosconi Cup Team.

Dennis Hatch, who also placed 5-6th this week, came into the event ranked 6th in the US and #4 on the US Mosconi Team race. His finish in this tournament may boost him up a place in the ratings.

Uncharacteristically, several top players found themselves out of the tournament early. #1 ranked US player, Shane Van Boening ended in 17-24th place. However Van Boening has a substantial point lead above all other US player and will feel little impact from his lack of points in this event. The #3 ranked US player Rodney Morris, after a first round loss to Matt Krah fought back to win his next six matches to be knocked out by top Canadian player John Morra finishing 13-16. Shawn Putnam, who is currently ranked #8 in the US and #6 on the US Mosconi Team race, settled for 33-48th place this week after losing his first round match to David Alcaide Bermudez from Spain 9-6 and fellow US player Rob Saez 9-7 in the fourth round.

The final four matches are scheduled at 10 am, the hot seat match at 12:30 pm, the semi-finals at 3 pm and the finals starting at 6 pm US Pacific Time. Viewers may catch today's match online at www.theactionreport.com

Dynamic Duos Crowned Winners at the 36th BCAPL National Championships

Las Vegas, NV. - May 16, 2012 – Scotch Doubles is a unique pool event. A successful team in the scotch doubles division takes two players who understand each other’s games almost as well as their own. Each must trust the other’s abilities and communicate as one mind. The best scotch doubles players learn to play in one rhythm. Where one player ends the other takes over.

The finals of the 36th BCAPL National Championships Scotch Doubles events saw the best of the best, Tuesday, May 15th at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. This year there were three BCAPL Scotch Doubles divisions with the addition of the Advanced Scotch Doubles.

In the Open Scotch Doubles, Lisa McNab and Brad Poorman (league #1120) from Saskatchewan, Canada outlasted the other 321 teams to win the coveted top spot winning $3,200. McNab also finished 33rd in the Women’s Open Singles 8-Ball division and 5th in the Women’s Open 9-Ball division.

48 teams formed the new Advanced Scotch Doubles division. The winners of this division’s inaugural year were the husband and wife team of Larry and Andrea Wilson (league #186) from British Columbia, Canada who took home $2,000. In addition to the win in the Advanced Scotch Doubles, Larry Wilson took 5th in the BCAPL 9-Ball Challenge.
The Wilsons overcame another Canadian team in the finals, Russ Whittle and Bev Ashton (league #624). Whittle had a particularly strong day. In addition to placing second with Ashton in the scotch event, he took second in the Men’s Advanced Singles.

The BCAPL Master Scotch Doubles is a favorite among the spectators. The top two teams this year again consisted of some well known names. From New York was the team of Tony Robles Jr. and partner Gail Glazebrook (league #1355) versus Janet Atwell and Wes Largen Jr. (league #1151) from Virginia. A total of 25 teams represented this division. Halfway through the brackets Atwell and Largen Jr. blitzed team Robles Jr. and Glazebrook 7-0. In the finals Robles Jr. and Glazebrook got revenge on that previous loss by taking the first set 7-3. Atwell and Largen Jr. redeemed themselves taking set two 7-3 for the division win and $1,800.

Following the Scotch Doubles event, the team competitions began, with 6 divisions and a total of 875 entries. The halls of the Riviera Hotel & Casino swarmed with colorful matching team shirts representing pool rooms and bars from around the world. Additionally, the CSI US Open 10-Ball Championship marked the halfway point of the 6 day pro level event. The Action Report live streams the US Open action at www.theactionreport.com.

Pool 300 Sanctions with CSI

Henderson, NV. - April 4, 2012 - CueSports International (CSI) is proud to announce the sanctioning of Pool300 by the BCA Pool League (BCAPL), starting June 1, 2012. CSI and Pool300 have reached a long term agreement to sanction all Pool300 players with BCA Pool League.

“CSI is proud to be affiliated with Pool300. We are very excited about Pool300 sending 50% of all local teams to our BCAPL National Championships at the Rio Hotel & Casino Las Vegas in July 2013. This is the highest percentage that any league has ever tried to send to nationals. It allows more players to participate in The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World and reinforces the CSI mission: More Choices for All Players,” stated Mark Griffin, CEO of CueSports International.
From a recent Pool300 press release:

“Most competing Pool Leagues either don’t offer a paid trip to their National Championship or reward a very small percentage of their teams, usually 5% or less. Pool300 will reward 50% of the teams in each league with a trip that includes roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, and entry fee into the tournament.

“In POOL300, clearing the table in order without missing gets the shooter a strike. Clearing the table with one miss is a spare. POOL300 is 100% offense. When it’s your turn, you’re shooting for yourself, not directly against another player. Players are handicapped in the same way as bowling so beginners can compete against accomplished players and still have a chance to win.
“For complete details go to http://www.pool300.com or to get a league started contact Scott Willoughby at 855-TRY-POOL300.”

19th USBTC Wraps up with Jeff Beckley Winning 8-Ball Division

CSI’s 19th Annual US Bar Table Championships concluded Sunday, with Jeff Beckley going undefeated in the 8-Ball Division. The first year for the USTBC at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino was a rousing success. It’s been a fantastic week of championship caliber pool, with outstanding performances in all three divisions: 10-Ball, 9-Ball and 8-Ball.

The 8-Ball Division kicked off on Friday, with 189 entries in the Men’s Division and 46 entries in the Women’s Division. All tables were in play, as there were three tournaments being contested simultaneously, the Men’s and Women’s USTBC 8-Ball, and a WorldPPA handicapped 9-Ball Tournament.

Jeff Beckley, who hails from Indiana, had an impressive tournament run. Jeff finished undefeated and notched wins over notable players such as Jose Parica, Larry Nevel, Francisco Bustamante and Robb Saez. His win/loss totals were an impressive 45-18.
Jeff started out the final day, with a hotseat match with Francisco Bustamante. Jeff played solid and capitalized on a few uncharacteristic mistakes from Francisco. Francisco was a favorite going in, as he had a very impressive run on Saturday. Jeff sent Francisco to the loser’s bracket with a 5-3 win and then went back to his room to relax until his 7:00 match.

Meanwhile, Robb Saez was all business on Sunday. His eyes were set on Jeff Beckley, but he would have to beat a host of champions to get there. Robb started off by knocking out Rodney Morris 5-2, and then sent Larry Nevel packing with a 5-0 win. Next up for Robb was Oscar Dominguez, who was having a great tournament himself.

Oscar was sent to the loser’s side late Saturday night by Francisco Bustamante, in a match where Oscar would get only two shots. Francisco broke and ran the first game. When Oscar broke the next game, the cue ball got kicked in and Francisco ran out. Then, Francisco broke and ran out. When Oscar broke the next game, the cue ball was kicked in again, and Francisco ran out. Francisco then broke and ran the final game, for a 5-0 win. In all, Oscar had only two shots in the match, both break shots.

Oscar would give Robb all he could handle though on Sunday, and they went hill-hill with Robb needing to bank his last solid cross side and draw his cueball into the 8-ball, which was tied up on another ball. It was a do or die shot, where any part of the shot going wrong would result in an easy out and a win for Oscar. Undaunted, Robb drilled the bank and drew softly into the 8-ball, freeing it up for an easy shot to win the set.

Up next for Robb, was Francisco Bustamante. Robb had everything rolling for him though at this point, and great play and a few rolls allowed him to move on to the finals with a 5-4 victory over “Django."

The finals got underway at 7:00 pm with Robb Saez needing to beat Jeff Beckley twice. Up until this point, it seemed destiny was on Robb’s side, but Jeff was not going to be denied. First Jeff got an early lead at 3-0, and then Robb crept back with a couple of games. Jeff got to the hill first, and had a few opportunities to close out the match, but couldn’t cash in on them. Jeff would need to keep his composure and put his missed opportunities behind him, if he wanted to end this in one set. Jeff would keep it together, and with a straight in 8-ball down the rail, he won his first USBTC 8-Ball Title.

Congratulations to Jeff Beckley with his 1st place finish and Robb Saez for finishing 2nd. Francisco Bustamante finished 3rd and Oscar Dominguez came in 4th. First paid $5700, 2nd paid $3300, 3rd paid $2000 and 4th paid 1200.

On the Women’s side, Stacy Allsup went undefeated and matched up with Melissa Little in the finals. Melissa would need to beat Stacy two sets to come out on top, but fell short, losing the first set 4-2. Congratulations to Stacy Allsup on her 1st place finish pocketing $875 and Melissa Little on her 2nd place finish and a $550 prize.

In the All Around Bonus, there was a three way tie for 1st place, between Shane Van Boening, Glenn Atwell and Jeff Beckley. They split $3500 in added Bonus money provided by CSI. On the Women’s side, Rebecca Wagner took home an additional $500 for 1st place and Stacy Allsup took home $250.

CSI would like to thank the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino for providing a perfect venue for the USBTC Championship. Thanks to Ric, Bonnie and Ken Jones with Bad Boys Billiard Productions for all they do in setting up and running this great event. Bad Boys would like to thank Bret Baker and Janet Okomoto for volunteering their time to assist them. The Lion Leaps to 2nd Consecutive Swanee Win

Named for beloved southern California player, Jay Swanson, the 16th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament (“the Swanee”) was hosted February 4-5 at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. A tournament steeped in tradition, the event is a virtual who’s who of west coast US and Pacific Rim players. Produced by CueSports International (CSI) and sponsored by Hard Times Billiards, CSI and the Magic Ball Rack, the event is known for being a two day grinder with a heady 192 player field of heavy hitters.

It is no small feat to cash in this event, but this year history took place. Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan won for a second consecutive year surviving a litany of fellow well known names including former Swanee champions Dave Hemmah (1996), Mitch Ellerman (2009), Amar Kang (2006) and the only other two time winner Morro Paez (1999 and 2001). Additionally, “The Lion” took out 2012 US Mosconi Cup team member Rodney Morris and “Mad Max” Eberle who himself has finished in the top three of the Swanee field 3 years (2005, 2011, and 2012). It was Eberle who initially knocked Pagulayan to the one loss side in the seventh round of the winner’s bracket. “The Lion” heaped revenge upon Eberle in the semi-finals sending “Mad Max” to the bleachers late Sunday night 7-2.

After two days and 16 rounds the 192 field was now down to two players. In the middle of the night surrounded by a room full of dedicated spectators, the single race to 11 finals was between Oscar “The Big O” Dominguez and Pagulayan. Dominguez’s road to the hot seat included the take down of Nick Spano, Corey Harper, Jim Hennessy, Brendan Crockett, Santos Sambajon Jr., Rodney Morris and Max Eberle.

In what can only be described as one of the most unique finals of any tournament, Pagulayan’s repeat win almost did not take place. “The Lion” dominated the match early and jumped to a quick 10-3 lead. Then in game 14 “The Lion” pocketed a tough but makeable back cut shot on the 9-ball for the match win. However, in a split second it was evident the cue ball would also drop giving Dominguez the game instead of Pagulayan the win.

The diminutive Pagulayan leaped in the air just as whitey wailed into a corner pocket. To add injury to insult when Pagulayan landed from his leap he sprained his calf and faced the rest of the match limping and having to adjust his stance to avoid further pain. Dominguez capitalized on the situation. Using strategic safety play “O” patiently took the score from 10-4 to 10-9. During those 5 games Pagulayan did have another opportunity to seal the deal but in a case of déjà-vu again scratched on a pocketed 9-ball. The cue ball caught the tip of one pocket and ricochet the ball into another pocket. In this situation it is hard not to think of that famous quote “It’s like a nightmare, isn’t it?” from The Color of Money.

The winning game came down to a moment of luck or redemption depending on the perspective. Dominguez again executed a strong safe leaving Pagulayan in the unenviable position of having to kick at the 1-ball for legal contact. Using sonic speed, Pagulayan sent the cue ball off a long rail, hit the one, then the rock careened off the opposite long rail into the pack of balls that housed the 9. The match money ball then gently rolled into a side pocket. This time whitey stayed securely on the table and “The Lion” was able to roar two years in a row.

CSI Supports BCA as Governing Body of Cue Sports in North America

As a long time member of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA), CSI supports the BCA in their recently announced pro pool initiative to provide funds to send North American players to international events. CSI is one of the first industry leaders to support the BCA initiative as a “2012 Official Contributor to International Competition.”

A solid framework for both North American and world professional pool has long existed, with the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) as the world body, and the BCA as the WPA member for North America. CSI commends the BCA on their commitment renewal as the “Governing Body for Cue Sports in North America.” CSI supports the BCA as the governing body, its pro points program, and the player selection process for international events.

With a decline in US player participation in world events, the time has come to change the structure of how pro pool in North America is supported. This is a great step in building that structure which will allow the top US and Canadian players to continue to compete and represent their countries internationally.

CSI, which produces the “US Open 10-Ball Championship,” one of the BCA pro point events, believes the future and strength of the sport lies in creating a synergy between the industry, the amateurs, the professionals, and the general public. Two years ago CSI launched the USA Pool League with that goal in mind, and a portion of CSI’s proceeds from the USAPL is pledged to promote and fund pro awareness.

We at CSI encourage industry support of the BCA in their new endeavor. In the past, CSI partnered with five other industry leaders to help support and fund the BCA Hall of Fame. It is time for all organizations that have the sport and industry foremost in mind to band together in support of the BCA.
