Overlapping Events at the BCAPL National Championships
June 9, 2016 | Author: Ozzy Reynolds
Each year there is confusion about how overlapping divisions or events are handled at the BCAPL National Championships. The purpose of this blog is to explain which conflicts we accommodate and which ones we do not. So please, if you are registered or may register for divisions or events that overlap, please read on.
Conflicts that ARE Accommodated
We schedule around conflicts caused by the overlap of specific amateur singles, scotch doubles, 9-ball teams, and 8-ball team divisions. You may compete in one of each and if any match conflicts occur, we will reschedule around them. Put another way, you may compete in any one of the singles, one of the scotch doubles, one of the 9-ball teams, and one of the 8-ball team divisions listed below without the fear of a forfeit. Of course, you must meet the eligibility requirements for any division you enter.

Conflicts that ARE NOT Accommodated
Conflicts we don't accommodate - everything else. Yes, we know that's probably too brief of an explanation so here goes. We would love to schedule around every possible conflict. After all, people participating in more divisions is beneficial to the tournament. However, it just isn't feasible because there is a limited amount of time to complete all divisions. Therefore, players assume the risk if they register for any other overlapping events. What does this mean? Well, if you register for any overlapping events that are not listed above and a conflict occurs (two of your matches are scheduled for the same time), you will have to forfeit one of them.
Here is the complete schedule of events for the 2016 BCAPL National Championships. Refer to this as you read the examples below.

Example 1 - No Risk to You
You register for Mixed 8-Ball Singles and Mixed Gold Scotch Doubles. You are also listed on the roster of a Mixed 9-Ball Division team and a Mixed 8-Ball Silver Division team. Your singles division overlaps your scotch doubles division by four days. Your 9-ball team division overlaps your singles, scotch doubles, and 8-ball team divisions by one day. If any conflicts occur during these divisions, we will reschedule around them. There is no risk to you. Please note that you must monitor all of your match times and inform the Tournament Director of any conflicts.
Example 2 - You Assume Risk
You register for the US Open 10-Ball Championship and Platinum Scotch Doubles. If you have not been eliminated by the last day of the US Open 10-Ball, you could have a conflict with the first day of scotch doubles. If you have a US Open 10-Ball match and a Scotch Doubles match scheduled for the same time on that day, you must forfeit one of those matches.
Example 3 - You Assume Risk
You register for the 10-Ball Challenge and you're also on the roster of a 9-Ball Team and a 8-Ball Gold Division Team. The 10-Ball Challenge overlaps 9-Ball Teams one day and the 8-Ball Gold Teams by two days. If any of your 10-Ball Challenge matches are scheduled at the same time as one of your team matches, you cannot play in both. You must either forfeit your 10-Ball Challenge match or not play with your team. If you do not play with your team, they must use an eligible substitute already on the roster or forfeit your games.
Example 4 - You Assume Risk
You are a female and you register for Mixed 8-Ball Singles and Women's 8-Ball Singles. The two divisions run simultaneously. If a match in one division is scheduled for the same time as a match in the other, you must forfeit one of those matches.
Example 5 - You Assume Risk
You are a female and you register for Women's 8-Ball Singles and Women's Senior 8-Ball Singles. The two divisions run simultaneously. If a match in one division is scheduled for the same time as a match in the other, you must forfeit one of those matches.
Why do we allow you to register for overlapping events?
Some people have suggested that we should not allow players to register for overlapping events in which we do not accommodate conflicts. We believe that is unnecessarily restrictive. For many, traveling to Las Vegas and competing in the BCAPL National Championships is the "pool pinnacle" of the year and they want to take full advantage of it. Who are we to say that a person cannot choose to compete in overlapping events if they wish?
If a female player wants to compete in Mixed Singles and Women's Singles to get maximum opportunity, good for her. If another player wants to compete in Mixed Singles but also get the experience of playing the world's best in the US Open 8-Ball Championship, that should be applauded. If a person is on an 8-ball team roster but would also like to compete in the 8-Ball Challenge, that's wonderful! As long as the players understand that they assume the risk for any conflicts that may occur, we believe they should be allowed to do so.
Summary
So, although this can be a bit confusing at first, the overall message is there are many overlapping divisions that we accommodate (see Table A) but there are others that we cannot due to time constraints. However, we do not believe that players should be denied the opportunity to compete in as many events as they wish if they are willing to accept the risk. Our players love to compete, are intelligent, and should have every opportunity possible.
